Character

Adoption or Foster sought for  Mavis (or Maeve as she likes to be known), a natty little dog of 9kg, fully sighted, born in  2019 and currently in Essex.  Maeve is an ex-street dog turned dainty pet.  She likes to think she  might pass as a Corgi mix (with her short legs and caramel coat) but she’s still got that special  perky mongrelly look, and eyes so huge and lovely they might have come from a bush baby.

Maeve started life in Romania but was adopted through BDRUK in 2023.   She’s had a great time  with her adopter (a single lady) and been a really good girl, but due to a change in her adopter’s  health and circumstances, the lady feels it would be best for Maeve if we found her a new home.  Ideally a forever home, but a fosterer who is willing to work on her dog reactivity would also be wonderful.

‘Maeve is an independent Madam’, her owner says, explaining that she is very happy being left for  4 hours or so, settling well, pottering around the house, playing with her favourite squeaky toys,  sleeping all night, fully housetrained, snuggling in her blanket and presenting no trouble at all.    She’s cuddly too: rolling up next to you on the sofa or sitting on your lap and doing her little  grumbling sound that means she’d like some attention.   It’s part of her cute and squrirrelly  character that it sounds a bit like a growl… but that’s just one of Maeve’s kooks.

Maeve would need to be an only dog.  Her owner explains that she has not been able to socialise  Maeve with other dogs, and Maeve is still showing fear and reactivity when she sees or hears dogs  out and about on walks.  It is thought that with careful training this might be overcome, but  currently Maeve enjoys quiet rural walks on a long lead where she encounters few others.

Maeve likes people and has her favourites, those she takes to especially.   She prefers gentle  introductions; in fact she prefers to be left to come over and introduce herself in her own time.   She has been great with visiting children aged 8 and 9 and could live with older respectful children  who know how to give her space.

Maeve currently shares a home with an outdoors cat but never comes into contact with it in the  home.  She tolerates its presence but would chase an unknown cat given the opportunity.    Maeve loves walks and would fit into a reasonably active home.  She would love being taken to a  secure field to pelt around.  She’d make a lovely jogging companion.  Despite her reactivity to  other dogs, she’s a confident outdoorsy explorer whose little legs will take her far!

Type of Home Sought

Maeve is pretty adaptable and will fit in a lot of places; as a companion dog for a  reasonably active single person, in a couple, or a family with respectful children.  The key thing is  that she’s an only dog and her new owner(s) are willing to understand and either work with or around her dog reactivity.
